I am Rob (a Graphic Designer), one of the founding partners of Unicorn Studios. Along with Steve (a Software Developer) and Dan (a Live Event Producer) we established the studios in June 2019. We all have freelance businesses that are based here.
We run it as a not-for-profit side project, as we identified a need for a better, more sociable, and collaborative co-working space in Ipswich. We wanted to create a place where we would actually like to work.
Our members range from artists, freelancers, business owners and fully employed remote workers.
Over the last few years we have been gradually developing the studio space to fulfil the needs of our members e.g. building a booth for phone calls and video conferencing and developing the basement as a meeting room and events space.
Unicorn Studios - Our First Year
In April 2019, after some decorating and building works, we were ready to open - just time for Steve to clean the windows!
In May 2019, we welcomed our first Unicorner, Dave Letts, a local WordPress Developer.
In December 2019, we hosted our first Xmas party. It was a great opportunity for all the studio members to have fun, unicorn racing and piñata bashing.
Unicorn Breakfast & Lockdown
Feb 2020 - Uni-cornflakes for breakfast - was our first networking event. We welcomed the wider creative community for delicious pastries and a chat.
March 2020 - We closed the studio for three months during lockdown.
April 2020 - Missing other Unicorners, we organised a Zoom virtual coffee morning. It was good to keep in touch!
July 2020 - We were finally able to re-open the studio to members. Back where we belonged!
Yet Another Lockdown & Basement Refurbished
January 2021 - We closed the studio for a further three months during lockdown.
April 2021 - We were able to open our doors again. Back together at last! (It felt like a long winter.)
October 2021 - Our basement space was redeveloped and opened for use. A quiet space away from the buzz of the studio.
December 2021 - Our telephone booth was installed. Expertly decorated and carpeted by Rob and Steve
Unicorn Membership Growth
September 2022 - Our 30th monthly member joins the studio. The Unicorner community keeps on growing!
Unicorn Studios has everything you need from a co-working space - a friendly, supportive community, super-fast WiFi and great coffee.
We are located in the heart of Ipswich with good transport links, nearby parking and easy access to local amenities.
A sketch of the Unicorn Inn, Ipswich in 1886. Initially, it was a hotel that was part of a large brewery complex, owned by Nathaniel Catchpole & Co.
In 1897, The Unicorn and the surrounding streets were decorated to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Victoria.
The Unicorn Brewery was used as offices/studios in the 1980s & 1990s, then it remained empty for years before being refurbished as flats.
Alongside our beloved studio, The Unicorn building now houses a number of businesses, including an escape rooms and wedding shop.
