Meet the Members: Simon Arnold

This month's "Meet the Member" features IT recruiter and consultant Simon Arnold, who enjoys playing golf, working out at the gym, and painting Warhammer models (he is a self-confessed geek).

Tell us a little about yourself and why you come to Unicorn Studios?

I’ve been running my own IT recruitment business for a couple of years from home. Initially this was great, however I had started to really miss the buzz of an office and the need to get changed out of my pyjamas before mid day……..

When I found Unicorn it represented the kind of environment I enjoyed being a part of and gave me an excuse to invest in my wardrobe.

What was your first job?

It’s fair to say I’ve had quite a few early in my career. My very first job was at the local newsagents at 13 years old, I did about 5 paper rounds and got paid extra to arrange the rounds for everyone else to deliver.

Other than that I worked in bars, restaurants, factories, warehouses, call centres, door to door fundraising and even on the regional news in Bristol interviewing people before I found my career in recruitment.

What work accomplishment are you most proud of?

Without doubt setting up and successfully running my own company has been my proudest achievement (and something I never thought I could do).

I owe a lot of thanks to my girlfriend, for giving me the push to do it, and a variety of people who invested in me throughout my career to give me the skills to make a go of it.

Are you an early bird or a night owl?

With regards to work definitely an early bird!!  I like to start early and, where possible, finish early so I can fit time in for friends, hobbies and fun!!

When working at home what is your guilty pleasure?

Other than wearing PJ’s all day, it’s probably sneaking off to play golf, go to the gym or paint Warhammer models (I am a bit of a geek).

What’s one of your favourite memories this year?

I’m fortunate to have lots of great memories from the last year but my 40th birthday was right up there.

I was really spoiled and having all of the people I care about in one place celebrating with me was the icing on the cake!

What’s something you’re planning on doing in the next year that you’ve never done before?

I’m learning how to throw clay…. No literally but to make pots and vases, let's see how I get on.

What is your hidden talent?

I  can do an impression of the bagpipes… its actually pretty good.

If you could snap your fingers and become an expert in something, what would it be?

Probably golf, it’s so hard and I am so bad at it but I love it.

What three people would be your fantasy coworkers at Unicorn studios? And why?

Danny Dyer – he’d be good on the beers after work

Elon musk – it would be interesting to understand how he thinks

Dana White – so hopefully I could get some free tickets to the UFC

Would you rather be a tiny unicorn or a giant hamster?

Tiny unicorn, obviously. Hamsters are owned / abused by children under the age of 10, eat seeds, live in a cage and only live a couple of years (which some might say is a mercy considering).

I'VE NEVER SEEN A SAD UNICORN!!
