This month's "Meet the Member" features Interiors Journalist Becca Cullum-Green, who is enjoying her recent decision to go freelance. She has, "fallen in love with the gym" as part of her morning routine, and would love to have her idol Dolly Parton as a co-worker.
Hey, I’m Becca! I’m a freelance interiors journalist and stylist based in Suffolk. After graduating university in 2016 I delved into the world of journalism, which involved lots of interning for free and enduring a few classic ‘Devil Wears Prada’ moments.
I’ve always loved interiors, specifically how a home can be an expression of an individuals personality and sense of self and also how a space can make someone feel. I landed my first magazine job at one of the leading interior magazines in the UK and worked my way up from there.
I made the plunge into going freelance this summer and haven’t looked back. My ‘job’ if you can call it a ‘real job’ involves lots of typing away on my laptop and also being out and about styling photoshoots and peoples homes.
I enjoy coming into Unicorn Studios once a week to get out of the house and to avoid the washing for a day! It’s a creative space filled with like-minded people who love to have a chat.
My first job at 14 was as a waitress at a local bar and restaurant. I still to this day think being a waitress is one of the hardest jobs in the world and I’m not sure if I can trust someone who hasn’t been through this experience. It definitely taught me a lot of life lessons.
Going freelance was a huge milestone for me and leading up to it felt like jumping off a cliff. I think my personality is really well suited to being self-employed. I love the freedom and being able to do what I want with my time. I feel like I’ve got a great work life balance now and I no longer have to take part in pointless meetings - woo!
An early bird. After falling in love with the gym a few years back I love getting up early and getting my workout done before my working day begins. It’s a perfect way to start to the day and makes me feel good.
Cornwall is one of my favourite places in the entire world. My husband and I love it down there and we try to visit at least once or twice a year.
In the summer we ventured down to watch a drum n bass orchestra on Lusty Glaze beach, it was such a great night and definitely one to remember!
There’s a wonderful tea room opposite my house where my husband and I got married last year. I subsequently have become very friendly with the owners and it’s very hard to resist chatting with them over a coffee and a slice of cake at least once a day!
I recently attended an event called ‘Boozy Brushes’ where a drag artist teaches you how to paint. The theme was Dolly Parton and I couldn’t believe I managed to paint something that wasn’t half bad. It’s a hidden talent that I’ve only just discovered!
This year we’re spending Christmas in Australia. We’ve been over there a few times to visit family but never at Christmastime. We’re spending new years on Fraser Island, which I’m sure is going to be amazing and a wonderful way to end the year.
I should probably say something like politics or the economy but I’m currently watching the new season of Selling Sunset and I’m very envious of the girls outfits and lavish lifestyles, so I’d have to say selling overly expensive homes in LA!?
Dolly Parton - I know she’s already been mentioned but she’s a true idol of mine. On my desk at home I have a sign that says ‘what would Dolly do? - I think if you follow this mantra you won’t go far wrong.
Miriam Margolyes - what a woman! Intelligent, smart and full to the brim of interesting stories. I’d be asking her questions all day so I’m sure we wouldn’t get much work done.
Anthony Joshua - for obvious reasons!
Definitely a tiny unicorn! You have to believe in magic or else what’s the point?
